Hey, Colleagues!  This is where I’ll post the great links that we come across as we explore the mathematics of our age.  Most will be direct links to websites and videos.  Others will be in files that you can open or save and print out.  Look for updates and changes to this page as we find more and more of the Good Stuff!  But remember, Colleagues - although these sites are used in our class at Walker G, remember that you are out on the Internet.  Go out to the sites and come back here, and make sure the adults at home know what you’re doing on this computer.  If they don’t, STOP NOW and GO ASK THEM!   :)

Gateway to the Good Stuff – Sipple-style! :)

24 Sep 09 – Just finished our first quiz on mean, median, mode and range, and you had to describe what those terms were in your own words.  Well, there will be more of that coming and you will have to start updating your Glossary of Terms in your Journal.  Take a look at the Illustrated Dictionary at the link below to get some cool ideas.

04 Oct 09 – Looking around for some cool sites that talk about Integers and the Sets of Numbers.  This one looks pretty complete.  It’s about 25 minutes long, and does a good job of clearly laying out how one set progresses into the next.  Check it out – but be warned!  This guy will sneak some new stuff on you from time to time, like showing you some of this on the graphing caculator (wo!).  Now that is just a little beyond where we are now, because we won’t need a graphing calculator in our class.  And there’s some other stuff in there, too, so don’t strain the brain!  Just be patient, listen to it and when he’s done he’ll go on to the next set of numbers.  It’s really pretty cool!

04 Nov 09 – came across some interesting tools that will help bring home what we learned about positive and negative integers.  Try clicking on each of the following links below and check out the ways they allow you to explore the numbers…

Find the Secret of Circle Zero!

So THAT’S what Zero Pairs are all about!

When you KNOW how to make a Difference!

…when you get to the site, click on the Instructions (upper right) to see how to play.  And, Colleagues – Let me know what you think ;) !

05 Nov 09 – Mrs Sipple is on the case, Colleagues.  She just sent us a great place to find the definitions that we need for our Vocabulary work in our Math Journals.  And it’s a lot better than our textbook, too.  Check it out!

Look up your terms in the Harcourt Math Glossary!

09 Nov 09 – Greatest common Factor (GCF) and Least Common Multiple (LCM) – live and in living color!  Check it out!

GCF & LCM just like we did in class!

And if you REALLY want to get funky, check out how to find them WITHOUT CALCULATING!   (OH, yeah!)

GCF & LCM Using Graph Paper – COOL!

18 Nov 09 – Just a cool link to the videos we saw on the planets, the sun and their sizes.  The second link is the one where we travel outside the galaxy!  (Looking at these kind of numbers, seems like Scientific Notation came along just in time, don’t you think?

By the way, can you use what you learned to transform the diameters of the planets from standard form into “Sci Notes”?  Yes, I mean scientific notation!  Well, can you?  Could be some Extra Creds in there for you…just put a title and a date on it and bring it in!

The Size of Our Planets

Elvis has left the Solar System!

(Sorry, Colleagues  :(   …couldn’t get rid of the ads!)

20 Nov 09 – And where did we get all of this knowledge of space and distant stars and galaxies?  Well, this is one of those places.  It’s called the Hubble Telescope.  It’s the system that has taken just about every cool picture of the cosmos that you have ever seen to date.  The Hubble has been orbiting our planet for years now and it’s about to be replaced by another cool piece of technology called the Webb Space Telescope.  They’re going to put that baby so far out in orbit that it will pass the far side of the moon!

It really is amazing what we have done with the mathematics you are learning – check it out, Colleagues!

Deep Space Pictures & Stuff on the Hubble and Webb Telescopes – Cool!

Space – brought to you by some inspired mathematicians!

02 Dec 09 - This is a quick link to give you a quick review of Powers and Exponents.  It lasts about 10 min or so.  It’s very basic, so it should be good for review.  But it does give you a couple of definitions and examples that will impress your friends back home – enjoy!  (Let me know if you have problems viewing it.)

Basic Exponents – for your listening pleasure!

For An Advanced View of Exponents – can you dig it?

16 Dec 2009 – Remember the Order of Operations game we played before our test?  Well, thanks to the Canucks, er, I mean the Canadians, here’s the link – and there’s a ton of other cool stuff on this site as well.  I think we’ll be going back there from time to time, so you might want to bookmark this as a place to get a different perspective on our work in the future.  Have fun!

12 Jan 2010 – Now here’s the way to bring everything into balance – ALGEBRAIC-ly, that is!  Take a look at this link to give you some helpful perpspective on what we’re really trying to do here – it’s a lot easier than you may think!

The Perfect Model – of Algebra, of course!

And for more good practice…thanks Ms McC!

And now for Inequalities – check it out!! :)

20 Jan 2010 – OK, Sports Fans – time for a review!  Oh, yes – and let’s call it “The Hot Quiz”!  Yeah, that’s the ticket!    You don’t want to wait until the last minute, do you?  Or maybe you just need a little more practice…Either way, just click below and serve yourself up some delicious math portions that’ll tickle yer innards!  In other words, it’ll do a body a good!  ;)

Set your options for 5 or 10 ques for individual practice, 20 questions for extra homework credit, and 40 questions for extra quiz/test credit.  Of course, you also need to check Math 7 and then start by clicking the green ”start” button.
