President Obama’s Student Welcome Back Address

President Obama’s Student Welcome Back Address on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at approximately 1 p.m. will be shown at James Monroe High School at the discretion of the teacher. Teachers have the freedom to also use the address as a supplemental resource during instruction.

Spirit Night Fundraiser for JMHS Volleyball Team

JMHS Volleyball team will hold a Spirit Night Fundraiser on August 26th at  Chick-fil-A in Central Park from 5-8 p.m. The team will earn 10% on all dining sales made during these hours. Please come out and support the Yellow Jackets Volleyball team!!

2009-2010 Student Parking Decals Increase

James Monroe High School student parking decals will be $50.00 per semester or $100.00 for the year. The parking permit application is available on line for the 2009-2010 school year or you may pick up an application in the main office of JMHS. Please make sure you have a valid driver’s license, a copy of the registration of the vehicle you will be driving on campus and have completed all information on the application including student and parent signatures on pages 1, 3 and 4.  Please make sure you keep page 2 as it is your copy of the parking regulations. Please note: you must have the car’s registration when submitting your application and not the insurance card or you will have to reschedule a time to come back in as only fully completed parking applications with current vehicle registrations will be accepted.  Also you must have taken behind the wheel in order to apply for a parking decal, no learner’s permits without the 180 day provisional driving license certificate will be accepted. **Students who are driving themselves to school must purchase a parking decal and park in their designated spot on campus. No off campus parking is allowed on side street. Ticketing and towing will be enforced by the Fredericksburg City Police Department. If you have any questions or to schedule an appointment to purchase decals, please call Mrs. Thacher at 372-1100.

Drivers Education – Behind the wheel

Effective July 1, 2009 the cost of Behind the Wheel at James Monroe High School will be $200.00. If you have questions please see Mr. Brown or Mr. Ribel.

Fine Arts Festival

The James Monroe Fine Arts Festival continues May 14-16 and May 26! The All-City Art Exhibit will be on display May 14-16 in the Commons area and the JM Drama department will present‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead’ the same evenings at 7:30pm. Crafts and concessions will be for sale. The All-City Chorus will conclude the Festival on the evening of May 26 at 7:00pm. Please come to JM and enjoy the amazing talents of our Fine Arts students.

James Monroe High School Cellular Phone Policy

CELLULAR PHONE POLICY

James Monroe High School Students may be in possession of cellular telephones on campus under the following conditions:

  Cell phones will be turned off and kept out of sight during regular school hours and during detention.

 Cell phones may be used at the conclusion of the regular academic school day.  The school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged cell phones, or any financial obligation resulting from cellular telephones.

Violations will result in the following: The first offense – Strike 1 – will result in a discipline referral being processed documenting the infraction and confiscation of the cell phone.  The phone may be returned to the student at the conclusion of that school day. The second offense – Strike 2 – will result in a discipline referral being processed and confiscation of the phone.  Retrieval by appointment by a parent or guardian only.  The third offense – Strike 3 – will result in a discipline referral being processed and confiscation of the phone.  Retrieval by appointment at the conclusion of the academic semester the incident occurred in by a parent or guardian only.  Any further violations will result in a discipline referral being processed and confiscation of the phone for the remainder of the academic school year.  Retrieval by appointment by a parent or guardian only at the conclusion of the school year.  Violation of the cell phone policy may result in additional disciplinary action.

 

 

Sports & Health Physical Fair

Sports and Health Physical Fair is open to all students. Vendors will be on hand with displays to encourage a healthy life style in addition to the $15 sports physical. This event will be held on Sat. May 9th from 8:00 am -4:00 pm at Riverbend HS. For more information contact Theresa Ross @ 540-455-8682

Spring Break is April 13 – 18, 2009

AP Exams

Students taking AP exams must have their balance for the AP Exams in by April 23rd to Mrs. Miller. Students who have not paid for their exams in full will not be permitted to take the test. If you have questions please see Mrs. Miller in the counseling center.

Junior & Senior 2009 Prom

The Junior-Senior Prom is on May 2nd. Prom tickets went on sale today, April 8th. Single tickets are $15.00 and Couples tickets are $25.00. Students must not be on any debt lists or they will not be able to purchase a ticket.

2009 Senior class sign

All seniors are invited to sign the 2009 class sign during lunchwaves, during 1st period or after school in the art room. Signing will be done today, Thursday and Friday. See Mr. Lovegrove if you have questions.

After Prom

After prom tickets are on sale now during all lunchwaves. Cost is $5.00 per person. Parental chaperones are desperately needed for the After Prom event starts at 1:00 a.m.  to 5 a.m. at Liberty Lanes. Please contact Kim Martinez at Walker Grant if you can volunteer to chaperone. Any donation of your time would be greatly appreciated.

No outside food or drink

Students are reminded that no outside food or drink is allowed to be brought into JM at anytime. This includes McDonald’s, Starbucks, Wawa, etc. Students who violate this school policy are subject to disciplinary actions.

National Honor Society Blood Drive

The National Honor Society will sponsor a Red Cross blood drive on March 27 from 8:00 am untl 2:00 pm. Each unit of blood donated can help save three lives, and blood is always desperately needed in the Fredericksburg area.  All donors must have a photo ID when they come to the scheduled appointment. Please make sure you are hydrated at least one day in advance.

Interims

Interims will be distributed on March 13th after school in student homerooms.

Senior Class Play

“Once upon a mattress” is this year’s senior class play. Performance dates are March 12,13 and 14th in the James Monroe Auditorium.  The play will start promptly at 7:30 p.m each night.  Tickets will go on sale on March 3rd. Please see any senior to purchase a ticket. Ticket prices are as follows: Students tickets: $8.00; Adult ticket: $10.00; Patron tickets: $12.00. If you have any questions please contact either Mrs. Thacher in the main office or Mrs. Waterman in the counseling center.

**Cast members families who  plan to attend the dinner on Saturday night need to see Mrs. Laskowski in the main office to purchase dinner theatre tickets. These are $16.00 combo tickets that cover both the cost of dinner and the play.  Any questions regarding the dinner theatre should be directed to Mrs. Laskowski.

Graduation Announcements

Graduation announcements and paper supplies that seniors ordered will be handed out during all lunchwaves on March 31st and April 6th. All balance are due at pick up. No personal checks will be accepted. Cap & gowns will be delivered in May. If you have questions regarding your balances please see Mrs. Thacher in the main office on Monday, March 31st .

SOL Writing Tests

 SOL writing tests will be on March 2-5 for all juniors who are taking an English 11 class this term or who need to retake it and for any senior who may need it for graduation.

Early Dismissal

Friday, February 27th is early dismissal. School will let out at 12:00 noon.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes Meeting

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will meet on Friday, February 27th at 7:30 a.m.

Senior Class Assembly

There will be a senior class assembly on Monday, March 2nd during 3rd period. Seniors are to report to 3rd period and wait to be released for the assembly. Discussions will include senior play ticket sales and senior trip.

Eagle Scout Project at JM

Help out the homeless of Fredericksburg by donating toiletries, underclothes and laundry bags to the Micah houses in support of Trey Lamar’s Eagle Scout project. There is a blue tub in the front office for your donations.

Varsity Cheerleading

All varsity cheerleaders must turn in their uniforms to Coach Crismon immediately. If you do not turn in your uniform your name will be placed on the debt list.

SAT Improvement Classes

Attention Juniors! February 10th is the deadline to register for the March 14 SAT. Prepare for the exam by enrolling in a Horizons Education SAT Improvement Course. This 15 hour, 6 session class will be offered at James Monroe High School. Classes begin Wednesday, February 18th. Due to the slowing economy the tuition price has been reduced to $199. Senior Class meeting

There will be a Senior Class meeting on February 5th at 2:45 p.m. in the lecture hall. All class officers and students are required to attend. Discussions will include the senior trip and fundraising planning.

Textbooks and Calculators

Students you are reminded to turn in your textbooks and or calculators to your teachers from last term or you will be placed on the debt list. If you are on the debt list you may be restricted from attending extra curricular activities.

National Honor Society Carnation Sale

Attention all students and faculty: What nicer way is there to let a friend or someone special know that you are thinking of them than to have a carnation and personal message delivered to them on Valentine’s Day? The Jayem National Honor Society is now taking orders for carnations and messages, which NHS members will deliver on Friday, Feb. 13th. The cost is $1.50 per carnation. Orders can be placed with any NHS member, Mrs. Linda Robinson, Mrs. Jewell Cunningham or in the JM Library. Order early!

Spectrum Club

Spectrum will hold a meeting on Friday after school in room 218.  The topic of discussion will be the Trevor Project.

Baseball

Any student planning on playing Baseball this Spring should start conditioning on Thursdays @ 5p.m. and Saturdays @10a.m. @ Lafayette Upper Elementary School.

Band News

This past Saturday several JM band students auditioned for the Virginia District 15 Honor Band.  We did extremely well placing several students in this prestigious group.  Congratulations go out to John Zarzour, Scott Gettlin, Michelle Babin, Brandon Barr, Daniel Burch, Matt Johnson, Emily Rowland, Parker Rowland, Xavier Griffin and Erin Tucker for making the district honor band.  Special recognition goes to Parker Rowland for placing 1st in the district on Alto Sax.  Congratulations to all and well done.

James Monroe Football CD

The Free Lance Star will be at JM during all lunch waves on Tuesday, December 16th to sell the  2008 Commemorative James Monroe Football CD. This CD highlights the outstanding year the Jackets had all the way from game 1 through game 14 – the State Championship win. Only cash or checks will be accepted. No credit cards

Fall Sports Awards

The Fall sports awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday, December 9th. Reception at 6:30 in commons with awards to follow in the auditorium.

Congratulations to the James Monroe Varsity Football team for their outstanding win Saturday against Monticello. The Jackets now travel to Williams Stadium in Lynchburg for the State Championship game this Saturday, Dec. 6th. College Applications

Please submit any college applications which must be mailed from the counseling center before the Winter break by December 5th. Download the college’s secondary school report form for your school counselor to complete. Submit it to Mrs. Ripley when you request yor transcript with your college application.

Young Life meeting

Senior Graduation Order Day

Seniors, if you missed the assembly yesterday you can pick up a packet from guidance to order your cap & gown. The Jostens Representative will be at James Monroe on Nov. 18 & 19th during all lunch waves for seniors to place their Cap& Gown and Graduation Announcement orders. A $60.00 deposit is required for all Jostens announcements and other Josten items.

League of Extraordinary Young Women

All members of the LEYW are expected to attend the meeting on Wednesday to hear our guest speaker, Vernice Armour, the 1st African-American female fighter pilot. We will meet in the lecture hall, room 120 at 3:15 p.m. Bring a friend.

Girls Basketball Tryouts

Yellow Jackets Marching Band News

Congradulations to the James Monroe High School Marching Yellow Jackets for attending Lee Davis High School Tournament of Champions and received 1st place in Drumline, 2nd place General Effect, and 3rd overall in the single A division.  Saturday, Oct. 25 they will attend Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors Association Music Festival at Massaponax High School.  Good Luck Jackets!

Junior Statesman of America

The Junior Statesman of America will have it’s first meeting of the year on Wednesday, Oct. 15th after school in room 212. Senior Class Fundraisers

(1) Oct. 23rd – Seniors will work the concession stand @JM for the Battlefield District Cheerleading Competition from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Seniors this is your opportunity to earn money for your senior trip. If you do not work you will not earn credit towards your trip. Some students have already earned $50 toward their trip.  Sign up with Mrs. Waterman in guidance to work.

(2) Oct. 27th – CiCi’s Pizza in Central Park from 5-8 p.m.  Currently all slots are filled but you may get on a waiting list in guidance in case someone can not keep their appointed time.

Oct. 31st –  Seniors 50/50 Football Raffle for the game has been cancelled.

Homecoming Tickets & T-Shirts

Homecoming tickets are available in the library, the school store, Mr. Gron’s room 223 & Mr. Hine’s room 246. Single  tickets are $7.00 and Couple tickets are $10.00

Freshmen Class

Senior Dues

Seniors dues are $50.00 and must be paid or senior will be placed on the school debt list. Seniors who owe a debt to JM will not receive their diploma at graduation on June 12th, 2009. See Mrs. Thacher to pay your dues or if you have questions.
