AFTER SETBACK VS. COURTLAND LADY JACKETS WIN 2 IN A ROW!

Monday, January 25th, 2010

The Lady Jackets basketball team wins 2 in a row after losing to district foe Courtland.  After a tough loss, the next game can’t come soon enough as the Jackets gain wins against Spotsylvania and Caroline to run their record to 9-4 and 5-2 in the district and took sole possession of 2nd place.  On Friday, the Jackets poured it on Spotsylvania 62-35 as Kirastin Cole netted 25 points. Akira Jones had a strong game with 10 and DaeQuana Bryant knocked down  two 3 pointers and added 9 points in the victory.  The Jackets had to come back with a bang on Saturday, as the young Cavaliers jumped to a 13 point halftime lead; only to see the Jackets play a stellar 1-3-1 defense in the 2nd half to rally to defeat Caroline 62-57. It was a total team effort!  Again, Kirastin Cole led the way posting a double-double of 32 points and 14 rebounds.  Kirastin is currently ranked 1st in the area in scoring and 2nd in the Washington Post listings and is also on the early watch list for All-Met. Backcourt mate Brittini McFadden had 11 and Kristen Williams provided some help with 8 points and 5 rebounds.  Reserve Jasmine Tyler continues to contribute off the bench providing tough defense and rebounding.  After the break for exams, the Jackets will travel to Culpeper on Wednesday.  GO LADY JACKETS!JM Lady Jackets Pics - 2009-10 034

LADY JACKETS REBOUND THEIR WAY TO DISTRICT WIN!

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

The James Monroe Lady Jackets basketball team rebounded their way in their 70-59 victory at home versus King George last night.  Trailing by 7 at the end of the 1st period, the Jackets remained poised and and got TOUGH and FOUGHT hard the rest of the way.  Junior Kristen Williams started her 1st game last night and provided a spark; narrowly missing a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds.  Kirastin Cole continues to roll leading the Jackets with 31 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.  Brittini McFadden added 11 and freshman Dominique Lavender continues to improve with 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots.  Also sophomore Myasia Williams added some punch off the bench with 5 points and 6 rebounds.  Great job ladies on a TOTAL TEAM WIN!  The Jackets are back in action on Friday, as they travel to Courtland to try to steal a district win on the road.  GO LADY JACKETS!

Tiger ‘Roles’ with the Punches

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

For a man who named his own yacht Privacy, Tiger Woods has been experiencing anything less over the past two weeks.  On November 27, the morning after Thanksgiving, around 2:25 A.M., Woods was leaving his home in Windermere, Florida. Woods’ Escalade rubbed up against a line of bushes, crossed over a curb, onto a grass median and into a row of hedges before swerving into a hydrant and crashing into a tree. It is said that his wife then came out of their home and broke the two back windows of his car with a golf club, trying to help him escape. Tiger was released from the hospital Friday afternoon.

The world’s first billion dollar athlete has now become the butt of a billion jokes. It would be easy to insert such a joke here but I think that it is more important to look at one man’s failures as a husband and a father than to go for the cheap laugh.

Micromanaged by a loyal staff since he came on to the PGA Tour, Woods created a brand that was too good to believe, loyal husband, devoted dad and arguably the best golfer to ever play the game. Then the events of Thanksgiving night occurred and we are all left shaking our heads.

Were we lied to? Or did we miss simply buy the package because of how it looked?

The admiration and love we had for Tiger were almost all based on things that have turned out to be untrue.  Loyal husband? Great Dad? Not so much. Great golfer? Sure. However, what we truly need to look at is why we feel compelled to make role models out of athletes.

Role models are people who do the right thing, day or night, whether people are looking or not.  Role models make sure we have the things in life to be successful, clothes for school, rides to and from practice, spending money (sometimes), and are there when we need to talk.  Role models are not people on TV that can hit a golf ball 300 yards.

Being a high school student myself, I have come to realize that we all need people to look up to, to help us make the right decisions. Whether it be a parent, grandparent, a teacher, or coach, a preacher, a family friend, someone alive or dead, or any combination of those, those people are real role models that can be there for you when you need guidance in your life.

Admire Tiger Woods for his golf game, admire Barry Bonds for the fact that he changed the game of baseball, admire Charles Barkley for his skill as a player and an announcer, but please do not make them role models.

LADY JACKETS ROUGHED UP INSIDE; LOSE 1ST DISTRICT GAME TO EASTERN VIEW!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Eastern View’s girls bakstball team got the signature win they were looking for by knocking off James Monroe 66-58 last night.  It was the 1st win in 4 games vs. the Jackets as the Cyclones pounded the boards time and time again for 2nd and 3rd opportunities.  Despite a box in one defense, senior Kirastin Cole led the Jackets with 24 points and 4 rebounds.  Brittini McFadden added 12 points, and Akira Jones and freshman Dominique Lavender each had 9.  Dominique also had 4 blocked shots and 4 rebounds. Like former Laker coach Pat Riley stated, “NO REBOUNDS, NO RINGS!”  The ladies will get back to work today and prepare for Chancellor on Friday!  GO LADY JACKETS!

Just Keep Swimming

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

With a team roster of record-breaking proportions, the 2009-2010 swim team has benefited from such an abundant stock of skilled and experienced members.  This distinct advantage has made it possible for the team to win.

On December 4, 2009 the JM swim team competed against Chancellor at the Fredericksburg YMCA.

Spotsylvania was also scheduled to perform in the meet, but their team failed to appear and thus forfeited the race.  JM was ultimately victorious over the Chancellor Chargers, making a strong showing early in the season.

A week later the swim team held a meet at the University of Mary Washington against Courtland and Spotsylvania.  This time both teams were able to attend and compete.  Courtland swam away with the win despite an impressive effort by the JM team, which placed second.

With a standing record of 2-1, the team is shaping up to be a formidable competitor in the Battle Field District.  The team looks forward to proving their prowess of the pool at their next meet.

LADY JACKETS WIN NORTHUMBERLAND HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT!

Monday, January 4th, 2010

The JM Lady Jackets improved their record to 6-2 by defeating John Marshall and Northumberland while capturing the championship of the Northumberland Holiday Tournament.  The Jackets defeated AAA John Marshall in the opening round 61-49 and held on to beat Northumberland 58-57 in the championship.  Tournament MVP Kirastin Cole and all-tournament teammate Brittini McFadden led the ladies along with strong performances by Akira Jones, Kristen Williams, and Myasia Williams.  The coaches would like to thank all of the ladies for their hard work over the Holiday.  District play begins again tomorrow as the Jackets take on Eastern View at home!  GO LADY JACKETS!JM Lady Jackets Pics - 2009-10 016JM Lady Jackets Pics - 2009-10 017
